Clare Macdonald makes films, series, writing and artworks about people trying to live inside rules that don’t quite work.
Their shorts (Death of a Pet, The Nocebo Effect, A Wait) follow characters navigating social, familial, and internal expectations in wild, weird, and lateral ways, often ending in disaster (though not always). The web series Bleachers uses genre to see its titular cleaners cruise through the anxieties, power plays, and unhinged behaviours of their middle-class clientele.
Lapdogs & Fools is a film installation that has been exhibited at Vielmettter in Los Angeles, and Gillian Jason in London.
Macdonald studied Classics at Oxford, trained at the NFTS, has co-written and collaborated on projects supported by Annecy, Berlinale, and Canneseries, worked with global brands, and is currently developing their debut feature.
